Hockey news

Wednesday 11th November saw Year 7 play their first hockey matches. Two seven-a- side teams travelled to Cowbridge Comprehensive School and played on their Astroturf. The A team won 2-0 with goals being scored by both Katy G. and Abaavya A. and the “player of the match” went to Fiona B. The B team had a close fought match and the score was 3-2 to Cowbridge until the last quarter when Cowbridge managed to put two more goal past Howell’s. Both of our goals were scored by Millie C.

The 15-strong U 15 hockey squad travelled to Oxford to play in the GDST U15 Rally. 22 GDST schools took part and were divided into four groups. Howell’s shared a group with Sheffield, Northampton, Shrewsbury and Notting Hill and Ealing. In the first match against Sheffield the whole team played very well, maintaining about 80% possession of the ball and narrowly missing a couple of shots at goal. The game ended as a 0-0 draw. They then had a 2½ hour wait before playing Shrewsbury, knowing that this would be a difficult match. The team had a couple of shots at goal, narrowly missing scoring, and were beaten 1-0. The next match was against a very strong Northampton team who beat Howell’s 2-0. The final match was against Notting Hill and Ealing and, although the Howell’s played very well, they were beaten 3-0. The girls were ably coached by Owain Dolan-Gray and we congratulate them on their tenacity, resilience and good team spirit.
