School Council attend Mental Health Debate

This year the School Council is focussing on our “Mental Wealth Project” as we feel this is a hugely important part of students’ wellbeing. Members of the Council had an opportunity to attend a debate concerning mental health entitled “This house believes that social media is anti-social”  at the All Nations Centre, along with other schools. This was the first Christmas Debate for Young People of 2015. The debate was hosted by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the speakers were all well-regarded doctors and experts in their fields of psychiatry. Speaking for the motion were Dr Clare Lamb and Professor Richard Williams, and they both highlighted the numerous harmful impacts that social media can have, such as depression and isolation. Speaking against the motion were Dr Jacinta Tan and Dr Mike Shooter and they put some very interesting arguments forward, emphasising the fact that social media is merely a tool, and it is how an individual uses it that can be harmful. Phoebe R. commented: "I think we all found the debate really interesting and it was great to hear the opinions of experts in this field, especially as it is so relevant to the project we are currently working on."
