Year 1 learn about early farmers

On Tuesday, 23rd February, Year 1 learnt about early farmers and how some foods were made. The girls reported on the day:

"We learnt about farmers from the past and they used to grind up wheat and corn to make bread. The farmers had to kill bunnies to eat and have a camp fire to cook them on. The farmers had cows that they milked. They also caught fish and they wore animal skin for their clothes. Farmers in the past did not have any fridges or sinks."
Francesca, Pihu, Erin, Florence and Mina.

"We had a go at making our own olden times soda bread. We mixed two types of flour, salt, buttermilk and a special ingredient. We then made it into a dough. Next we shaped the dough into our own shape of bread roll. We then let the bread rest on some flour before putting it in the oven."
Heidi, Charlotte H. and Isabella.

"We then got the top of some special milk called cream and we had to shake it in a jar to make it into butter. We had to shake it for a very long time and it hurt our arms. The fat then stuck together to make butter and the buttermilk was poured away. Then we shaped our butter and put it in the fridge."
Amelia, Elizabeth and Illeana.

"Next we had a go at grinding  seeds, cardamon pods, pudding rice and black pepper. It went all small and into little bits and broken. We could smell it."
Eloise, Ava, Saifee and Yume.

The girls all enjoyed sampling a little of their warm bread with the delicious butter before packing up the remainder to share at home with their families.
