Foods from around the world

On Tuesday 12th April Year 1 had an exciting afternoon of sampling different foods from around the world. Lots of the girls brought in dishes to share and some parents also came in for the afternoon to talk about their dishes and share them with the class.

First of all we sampled food from Italy."I have brought in my Nonno's Italian meatballs. He was born in Sardinia. He used to run an Italian restaurant called Scalinis. He moved to Wales when he was 15. They are made with tomatoes, garlic, onion, celery, carrots, apple, flour, beef and salt and pepper. My favourite dish that my grandad makes is pasta" Amelia.

"My dish comes from Italy. I am quarter Italian. My daddy is half Italian and made the pizza. He has made a pizza with cheese, ham and olives. I enjoy making pizza at home" Elizabeth. Erin also brought in some Italian Salami to try and it was delicious.

The next type of food we tried was from Germany."My food is called Käsespätzle. It is a cheesy noodle dish. You make a dough with eggs, flour, water and salt and you push it through a press to make it into noodles. You then put it into boiling water to cook. Once it is cooked you sprinkle cheese over the top of it" Mina.

We then sampled food from Greece."These are spinach pies and cheese pies. These are from Greece. The cheese pies look like little girls with orange eyes and the spinach pies look like lolly pops" Selena. "This is a little dish of chicken, Greek salad and pitta bread. This is also from Greece. In the Greek salad there is Cucumber, feta cheese, tomatoes and olives. I have made this food because my great grand parents are from Greece" Aaliyah. "I have Greek delight. It's a traditional sweet like jelly. These are mostly made from sugar. I have got sweet pastries to try too and they are sticky" Erin.

We then sampled a variety of dishes from various countries within Asia."It's called Indian vermicelli, known as Sawei in Urdu. It's got special noodles, ghee, sugar, cardamom, saffron, and some Keira flower water, you break up the dry noodles and fry them in the butter. It's like a spicy sweet noodle. My grandma made this for me" Isra.

"We make Puri, chickpea curry and potato curry on special occasions. This is a popular dish in Punjab. My mum makes curry at home. My favourite curry at home is the potato curry" Pihu."This is a curry called biriyani, it's got halal chicken in it. It has chicken, ginger and garlic, red chilli, onion, Garam masala. This is a Pakistani version of a biryani rice because my Babu lives in Pakistan. It's my favourite dish" Saifee. "This sweet pastry is called Klaycha. Some have dates in them and some have nuts and cardamom. I have it to eat on Eid. This dish is from Iraq" Malak.

"My mummy has made Sushi, this is from Japan. Sometimes she makes it with salmon. It is rice wrapped in nori paper. She has made three types of sushi today, cucumber with salmon, cucumber with tuna and cucumber with avocado. The brown sauce is a dipping sauce called soy sauce. My favourite sushi is cucumber and salmon" Yume.

Throughout the afternoon we had lots of discussions about dietary requirements and the girls decided which dishes were allowed to be eaten by vegetarians, dairy free children and gluten free children.

We are very proud of the Year 1 girls as they have all become a lot more adventurous about trying new foods and have mostly been pleasantly surprised that they enjoy the taste of many foods even when they think they're not going to!

We all had a wonderful afternoon and what a fantastic experience the girls were treated to. Many thanks to all the families that supported our world food afternoon by sending in delicious dishes and treats for us to sample.
