Oxford Maths Conference

On Wednesday, six Year 6 girls went to the Oxford Maths Conference. Everyone was excited, even though we were on the bus at 7am.  Once we got to Oxford University Maths Institute, we were taken to the huge lecture hall, along with girls from 24 other GDST schools.
Our first presentation was about Reuleaux triangles by Mr Tiley-Nunn. We found out that you could make your own skateboard from Reuleaux triangles based on a pyramid and a tray!  Then we had to make an icosahedron out of 20 tetrahedrons.  We had to fold them out of paper with only sellotape to help us.  Our groups were some of the fastest to make them.  Then we had a quick lunch before going for a tour of the Institute.  We had a look at the maths-inspired architecture, which was just amazing.  Our favourite, though, was the windows you could write on with whiteboard markers, and the matching tables.  We saw really cool equations written on them and we had a go too. The patterns were all around the building.  Once lunch was over we headed back to the lecture hall to have our final quiz.  As a team we got 65 points, an impressive score.  We had an amazing time and really hope that the current Year 5s have just as much fun as we did when it's their turn!
