Debating News

It has been a very busy half-term for the Howell's debaters. In addition to the weekly debates as part of the Enrichment programme, and the weekly Senior School Debating Club, there have been two external competitions.

On Monday, October 10th, Chloe D-J (Year 13), Ishrat C and Hema N (Year 12) ably represented Howell's at the Institute of Mechanical Engineers Debates held at Techniquest in Cardiff. Hema and Ishrat won their debate, arguing that the constant monitoring of our health does more harm than good, while Chloe and Ishrat were only narrowly defeated in their difficult task of arguing against the motion that all vehicles should be automated. Well done, girls.

On Wednesday, 18th October, Nia M-R and Udita D of Year 13 put up a very strong case for the continuation of university tuition fees in the local round of the Wales Schools Debating Championships, and were placed second of the eight competing teams - a very creditable performance, also having been given a difficult case  to argue. Both girls were awarded Outstanding Debater Certificates and qualified for the selection process for the Welsh team.

Next half-term will be equally busy with Howell's hosting the Oxford Debating Workshop on November 9th and competitions at Swansea University on November 19th and the University of Warwick on November 26th. Good luck to all those taking part.
