Howell’s Retains Prestigious Chess Trophy

The Welsh Secondary Schools’ Chess Championships 2016 were held on 12th November at St.John’s College in Cardiff.
The Howell’s team, captained by Shayanna S, had a terrific day to retain the famous John Delahunty Trophy, first won by the school in 2015. The other three stars were Neya G (Yr 9), Venetia S and Susanna F (both Yr 7). Despite the fact that all four girls have represented Wales at international level they did not have it all their own way at this tough event, as many of their opponents were also internationals.
After a tough start against Chepstow Comprehensive, the Howell’s team hit its stride with wins over St. John’s & Cathays High. The last round was against Monmouth School, who had won the trophy eight times in the previous 12 years. Saving their best performance until last the girls responded to the pressure in emphatic style with a decisive 4-0 victory!
Chess teacher Kevin Thomas said: “This is another fine moment for Howell’s – earlier in the year we won the Primary Schools’ trophy & after today we are simultaneously champions in both categories. Venetia & Susanna were in that Junior team. Our chess squad is a very young one which means that we can enjoy further success in the coming years.”
